Designing the joy of reading

The LESA app

Reading skills among children are dropping worldwide. In the US, 40% of fourth graders now read below a basic level, the worst result in over two decades, and reading enjoyment is at a historic low worldwide.

LESA is a reading game for children from 6 years old, created by the innovation studio Revera and designed with 14islands.

LESA means "to read", and the mission is simple. Spark the joy of reading. Build stronger readers. And give parents and schools a clear view of how children across the nation are progressing.

We helped shape the concept and designed the product: a learning path with a new story every day, written by children's book authors, and gamification that makes reading feel like play. Kids climb levels, choose their favorite character, and unlock rewards after reading, while parents and teachers get detailed statistics.

"We are rolling up our sleeves to build the most fun reading game in the world, and the design work from the 14islands team has been essential in getting us there."

Birgir Birgisson, CEO of Revera & LESA.

Regular reading is at the heart of it all. Research on the habits of millions of students shows that 15 minutes of reading a day is the tipping point where vocabulary and comprehension start to accelerate. That is why LESA serves up a new story every day, turning those magic 15 minutes into a habit kids look forward to.

"We wanted to create an experience that feels natural for children in today's digital world, where design and interactivity inspire a love of reading,"

Hjörtur Hilmarsson, CEO of 14islands.

For us, LESA shows how thoughtful design and technology can drive positive change on a real societal challenge. The game launches in Iceland in August 2026, with plans to expand internationally.
